Caring for your Dogs health through Winter!
Share
Winter can bring with it certain health risks for dogs, so proactive care is essential:
Grooming Adjustments
Keep your dog’s coat healthy and their skin moisturized to prevent winter dryness. For dobermans and sighthounds, both of which have shorter fur, a moisturizing spray or oil can help maintain skin health. Longer-haired breeds like spaniels may need more frequent grooming to prevent matting caused by damp weather.
Hydration and Diet
Dogs may drink less in winter, so ensure they stay hydrated by adding water to their meals or offering warm broths. This can be particularly beneficial for active breeds like cockapoos that still require high energy throughout colder months. Adjust their diet as needed to support their energy needs and maintain their body temperature.
Veterinary Care
Winter is a good time to check in with your vet to ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and protected against cold-weather pests. Heart-worm, fleas, and ticks can still pose a risk, especially in milder climates or during warm winter spells.
